Many people debate whether or not they are ready to go completely fixed gear on their bike. Admittedly, it isn’t for everyone.

Are Brooks Saddles Worth It?

A lot of people are hesitant to believe a Brooks Saddle is worth the price and the break-in time. If you ride my Brooks, you’ll like it. But if you ride your own Brooks, you’ll love it. Brooks leather saddles are made for years of use and thousands of miles. Padded saddles are the opposite experience. The more you use a padded saddle, the more worn out it gets and loses its padding. The more you ride a Brooks, the more worn in it gets. It matches your riding style and the position you ride in. Brooks leather saddles are suspension-based, rather than padding-based, so the floating feeling of riding a Brooks comes from the tension of the leather.

Brooks saddles are not cheap either. A typical padded saddle might last you a few years if you ride once a week. But for commuters like me, nothing beats the durability of a Brooks. I have a Brooks on my bike that I’ve had for about a year now. Last summer I rode around 10 miles a day. During the school year I’d ride around 6-7 per day. So those miles pile up and put a lot of wear on a saddle. Now, when I put my old seat on, (Notice a Brooks is a saddle. A racing seat is just a seat.) it feel like riding on a metal spike. Such a difference riding a suspension saddle.

I highly recommend riding a Brooks. It’s expensive ($100-200 depending on the model), but a classic B17 Brooks will last you 10 years of daily commuting and will only get better over time.

Lots of people discount the Brooks as being a hipster trend. You know what else is a hipster trend? Vinyl records. Ask any audiophile and they’ll tell you. It’s about history and quality, not just a trend. Buy Brooks. Buy vinyl. Buy local.

Bike Polo Gains Popularity in Taiwan

Bike polo has been a cult phenomenon in the fixed gear community in the States for a few years now with tournaments sprouting up in hipster zones like Brooklyn and Portland on both sides of the country. With the increase in popularity in fixed gear bikes, bike polo is making its way through Asia now.

It’s interesting how the trend has remained quite the same since its roots in Brooklyn a few years back in the bike messenger culture. Bike polo is fast becoming a recognized sport with leagues and tournaments in public parks with grass roots organization. You won’t find a bike polo game at the YMCA yet, but you might find one in the parking lot at night. It will be interesting to see if bike polo can move beyond the fixie culture and into mainstream sports, with the obvious barriers to entry of being a capable cyclist and having a group to play with.

Normal bicycles are not prime for bike polo. The reason the fixed gear community started the trend is because of the superior control riding fixed gives the cyclist. The ability to perform a trackstand, ride in reverse and have complete control of your wheel’s motion, not to mention the absolute simplicity of the bike itself, make brakeless fixed gear bikes the ideal instrument for bike polo.

Edmond Needs a Bike Culture

That’s my plan. Edmond’s bicyclists are typically, super-rich, throw my $5000 bike on the back of my giant SUV types. I’m trying to get a real bicycle culture going in Edmond. It’s where I live and I’m tired of living in a college town with a very limited bicycle culture. I want to start a Critical Mass, get some group rides going, and hopefully a bike polo tournament at some point in the future. It’s about time Edmond realized it’s a college town and started having people riding bikes around town somewhere outside of the bike paths in the parks. A bicycle is the most beautiful and simple means of transportation.

Custom Frames Come Into Their Own

The newest trend in bike culture is custom frame building. After years of building bicycles from various parts, the do-it-yourselfers have grown up and now they need more customization. So in the hunt for ways to get their bikes just right, we now have custom frame-builders all over the country welding their own frames from scratch. Especially with a resurgence in interest in old arts and crafts style, people have turned to custom frames not just for the look, but to learn a new trade. And it’s working out very well for some frame builders like Geekhouse.
